Fiscal Conservative

I am a strong fiscal conservative. There are some who advocate for slashing critical services as the definition of conservative. I believe that it takes a real conservative to take the hard votes against Republican pork as much as Democrat pork.  It is not conservative to pull the rug out from under hard working Montanans because government isn’t doing their job right. I will do the work and fix it! You may have heard about Montanans receiving health care benefits they don’t qualify for. My opponent says this is reason to eliminate the entire program. I will fight to get it …

Medicaid Expansion and Abortion

There is currently a rumor that those who support Medicaid Expansion have supported abortion. That is simply untrue. For over forty years, the Hyde Amendment made federal Medicaid dollars to fund abortions illegal. Additionally, pregnant women have had access to Medicaid, so Medicaid Expansion does not serve this subset of the population. Below are two letters from the Montana Legislative Services Division, Office of Research and Policy Analysis explaining in further detail.

Fight COVID-19

Our communities, with the support of our great health care system, can minimize the impacts of coronavirus in Montana. I pledge to be a leader for our community on the fight against this outbreak and providing resources for our families and businesses. Follow me on facebook for the latest. For any community to win the battle against this pandemic it is important that every citizen has access to affordable health care. Early detection and diagnosis can prevent further spread and impacts on individuals, families, coworkers and our hospitals. Medicaid expansion is a key component to health care access for almost …

Medicaid Expansion

Medicaid expansion is simply the extension of health insurance at no or very low cost for the working poor, with the majority of the cost born by the federal government. I have been an advocate and voted for the passage of Medicaid expansion since my last term in the legislature. There are many of our family, friends, and neighbors that work hard every day at low paying jobs that cannot access health insurance. The Montana version of Medicaid Expansion has requirements for work and skin in the game to make even small payments if at all possible. The executive branch …

Education

I am a strong supporter of public education and pledge to fund our K-12 and higher education budgets. I attended the West Valley Schools as did my children. I graduated from Flathead High School and my kids did until my youngest graduated from Glacier High School. We each attended Montana State University as well. Go Cats! For Montanans to thrive now and into the future we must have a world class education system. At the K-12 level that is a system with high standards, local control and accountability to the tax paying citizens. Local control of our schools by locally …

Public Lands

Montana has a great tradition of allowing access to our public lands. I will work to improve access and open inaccessible public lands so we can all use our shared resource. Our public lands are an important reason many Montanans live here.  For generations, we have been fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, and camping across our grand landscape. I will fight to ensure that this tradition can continue for every Montana family across the state.

Infrastructure

One of the major responsibilities of state government is to provide the infrastructure that we all need. Montana relies on a modern infrastructure system to be competitive in the world market to move physical and online products, resources and people. We can work together to find funding mechanisms for priority projects. A bonding strategy for our roads, bridges, sewers, digital access and university projects let’s us even our budget costs over the life of the project. Safety of our bridges and water systems for our people and our environment is a priority. High paying jobs that Montanans need for their …

Public Health

I support efforts to ensure the health and safety of Montanans in scientifically supported ways. Beyond COVID-19, vaccinations and food safety are two public health issues currently in the news. The coronavirus will likely need new policies to be created and approved. I will work to ensure the effective methods to fight this pandemic are available in Montana. Vaccination I believe the state must protect our children and the public through basic vaccination laws. Vaccination has caused the near eradication of polio, smallpox, and measles. But today, with people continuing to buy into discredited sources, some diseases are making a …

Natural Resource Development

Montana has a long history of developing our natural resources. Today’s natural resource development is safer and cleaner than ever before. Responsibly developing our resources allows Montana to provide good paying jobs, develop cutting edge technologies to protect our environment, and create and develop sustainable energy sources. We need an “all of the above” resource policy while ensuring protections to our landscape, environment and people. The economy that has developed in Montana in each of these areas contributes through jobs and revenue which comes back to all of the people of Montana while lowering our tax burden.

Waterways of the US

President Trump has recently made changes to the Waterways of the US policy. This allows for clearer definitions while still protecting our navigable waterways. The local paper included a few of my quotes on the subject. Read the Daily Interlake article here: MONTANA FARMERS, CONSERVATIONISTS DIFFER ON NEW WATERWAY RULE February 23, 2020 at 5:00 am | By KIANNA GARDNER Daily Inter Lake In late January, the United States Environmental Protection Agency announced a sizable rollback on already-repealed Obama-era waterway protections with the introduction of President Trump’s Navigable Waters Protection Rule. The move has spurred a great deal of controversy in …
